My Grandmother

When I was born
My grandmother acted like
she didn't want to know me
There were things that she knew
But she wasn't there to show me
But time passed on and
I grew to full manhood
At the age of 28 we met
And it was all good

We discovered a mutual love
For the poems of Paul Lawrence Dunbar
I guess it's really true
That when an apple falls from a tree

It doesn't travel very far
One of the many things
that she taught me
Was that, if on paper you
would record your poetry
You should always make sure
That it is at least worth the life
of a tree.
