my name is joe

there goes joe as he wanders
down the streets of the city

my name is joe
he tells himself
over and over
my name is joe
this I know
they told me so
they told me so
I had to go
remember joe
you have to go
this is so

pat on head
time to go, joe
stop being slow
here are your clothes
here is your medicine
take this pill
in the morning to keep your head on straight
take this pill
in the afternoon to keep running fine
take this pill
in the night to keep you safe from the dark
and remember, joe
take them with meals
and a glass of water
don't chew them, joe
swallow whole
here are the prescriptions
for when you run out
here's the bus schedule
we showed you how to use
keep these papers so you know
that your name is, joe
here's the directions
to the half-way house
you know, joe
that place where you need to go
here's the directions for your job
that we taught you so
you know, joe
we can't keep you here anymore
you been here most your life
the government says its fine
you are just a little slow
you will be all right
just go, joe

joe looks around and can't be found
a reason why he is standing here
rubs his old gray head
and can't figure out why he is crying.
fumbles in his pocket to look for his name
the scattered papers on the wind go flying
poor joe is trying and the puddle
of despair widens

my name is joe
he tells himself
over and over
my name is joe
this I know
they told me so
they told me so
I had to go
remember joe
this is so
you have to go
I think I'm joe
I have to go
