Just An Onion

Pluck me
From the earth,
Raw and ugly
Decorated
With dirt;
Chop off
By my
Umbilical roots.
Please peel
Off that first
Layer of inedible
Innocence;
There you’ll
Find a bitter
Coat of confusion.
Keep peeling
Pass that
False faith,
Remove that
Membrane
Of misery,
Shed that skin
Of sadness;
I get
A little sweeter.
Scrape
Off that
Clear casing
Of misguidance,
Scratch
Off that
Stubborn shell
Of self-pity.
There! There, you see it!
The film of faith,
Hull of happiness
And humility;
It right there!
Right there,
Is my
Sweet center,
Required in the
Recipe of life.
